Abstract

This project investigates physiological (mainly gastrointestinal) and feeding behaviour changes in human volunteers following adaptation to high fat diets. The project utilises a number of novel techniques to investigate the role of receptor plasticity in these adaptive responses: measurement of gastric emptying, gallbladder contraction and hormonal responses to specific nutrient challenges, forming the basis of the physiological determination while feeding behaviour will be assessed using food diaries and laboratory measures. The location of sites responsible for these adaptive changes forms the first major portion of the work, this is extended to investigate the time course and specificity of responses to different nutrients.
