Abstract

Research on eating behaviour in obesity the 1960s and 70s focused primarily on comparisons between obese and lean individuals. This research design constrains interpretation of the contribution of variation in eating behaviour to the aetiology of obesity, since any differences could be attributable to the obese individuals' attempts to control their weight (e.g. dietary restraint), or other factors which are associated with established obesity (e.g. biased reporting). The well-established familial risk in obesity provides the opportunity to study eating behaviours before the development of the excess body weight among at-risk groups. The aim of this study is to examine food choice, appetite and satiety in normal weight children with a familial risk of obesity, to see whether variations in eating behaviour are part of the risk profile for obesity.
