Abstract

High resolution and high sensitivity NMR in both solid and liquid states will be used to characterise the chemical forms of organic C, N and P, in whole soils and in physically separated fractions and in extracts. The overall aims are to identify the fractions of soil organic matter (SOM) which differ in availability towards microbial activity and to investigate mechanisms of SOM stabilisation. A specific aim will be to test the NMR 'visibility' hypothesis, namely that NMR visible components are in the most biologically labile pools. We shall track the fate of organic inputs in various pools of SOM. 15N labelled plant inputs will be used. The approach will be multidimensional and multinuclear, 13C, 1H, 31P, 15N mainly, including some 27Al work on the soil matrix. We shall study soils from long-term sites at Rothamstead and other long-term sites from all over the world.
