Abstract
Changes in land-use and in agricultural practice have long term impacts on soil organic matter dynamics. This in turn will affect the fluxes of carbon dioxide to and from agricultural soil, and the availability of carbon and nutrients in the soil. The primary aims of the proposed project are a) to improve our fundamental understanding of the factors affecting the long-term dynamics of soil organic matter following changes in land-use and agricultural practice, and b) to incorporate this new understanding into the Rothamsted Carbon Model to improve its performance under these conditions. These aims will be achieved through the modelling of long- term datasets made available by the global Soil Organic Matter Network (SOMNET). All collated data will be made available to other SOM researchers via the SOMNET network.
