Abstract

This extension builds on current Linked Group research. Aphid assessment of plant suitability will be investigated using video/electronic monitoring of behaviour and manipulation of leaf surface cues, i.e. cuticle chemistry and morphology and interactions with local odours. In addition, the mechanisms for changes in flight behaviour responsible for landing avoidance in the presence of non-host odour and the location of a sex pheromone source by male aphids will be examined using three- dimensional video analysis of flight tracks. The results will impact on the design of novel aphid control strategies.
