Abstract

Campylobacter jejuni is the major cause of food bourne gastrointestinal disease in the UK, but is very poorly understood at the genetic level. This has hampered the development of rational approaches to study the survival and spread of the organism in food and other environments. To systematically characterise the organism at the genetic level, this project will construct an ordered cosmid library of the C. jejuni NCTC11168. The library will be a national resource allowing the efficient identification, cloning and analysis of any C. jejuni gene and will be used as a reference to compare genome variation among food, environmental and human isolates. Above all, the ordered library will be an essential resource for sequencing the entire genome.
