Abstract
1) To purify the GSTs responsible for herbicide detoxification in wheat, to identify the respective coding sequences in a cDNA library and express the recombinant enzymes in bacteria. 2) To characterise the recombinant and plant GST activities with a range of pesticide substrates and use this information to help design new highly active herbicides containing functional groups which will allow them to be readily detoxified in wheat. 3) To study the regulation of wheat GSTs by herbicide safeners in order to improve their current and future use.
