Abstract
Studies will be carried out to elucidate the gastrointestinal mechanisms which control fat intake in normal human volunteers and their possible modulation in obese subjects. First, the nature of the intestinal stimulus controlling eating behaviour will be investigated by controlled intestinal infusions of lipids during measurement of food ingestion and hunger and fullness ratings. The conclusions will be tested by experiments using oral preloads. Second the interaction between intestinal nutrient stimulus and gastric distension will be determined using an electronic computerised barostat. Third the effect of intestinal infusion of lipid compared with other nutrients on food choice and food selection will be ascertained. The results will be used to define the principles for the design of meals with predictable effects on eating behaviour.
