Abstract
Cranial placodes are a key feature of vertebrates, and understanding their evolution is an essential step in understanding the evolution of the complex vertebrate head. At the molecular level placodes are marked by the expression of a number of developmental pathways that, during early vertebrate evolution, were co-opted into placodes to regulate their development. We will investigate how the regulatory pathways controlling placode development have evolved. We will characterise members of these regulatory pathways from basal chordates and examine the evolution of regulatory cis-elements in transgenic ascidian and chick embryos. This will reveal the molecular changes that underlie the evolution of these novel vertebrate characters.
