Abstract

Our current understanding of the molecular basis of development in the Bilateria derives from a few key model taxa, drawn from the Deuterostomia and Ecdysozoa. Here we propose to extend such analyses to the third great bilaterian group, the Lophotrochozoa, using a polychaete annelid. Polychaetes are a classic example of a metameric, triploblast, bilaterian, and provide an excellent model for comparison to other phyla. We will focus on two key aspects; homeobox gene cluster organisation and evolution, and nervous system development. This will establish the extent of conservation and degree of diversity of polychaetes with other phyla, facilitating reconstruction of the ancestral Bilaterian genome and bodyplan and its subsequent evolution.
