Abstract

The objective is to bring together molecular genetics (Cambridge, UCL), metabolic modelling (Oxford, UCL) and experimental studies (UCL) of Saccharopolyspora erythaea to create a foundation for the production of novel antibiotics at realistic titres. The project will complement and draw upon research on Streptomyces coelicolor. The proposed research addresses the interdisciplinary objectives of the Manufacturing and Post Genomic Technologies Initiative and the global challenge of dealing with drug resistant pathogens. The metabolic model which results will link primary metabolism to secondary metabolism and be generally applicable to the main antibiotic producing organisms. (Joint with grants 17699 and 17702).
