Abstract

The persistence of strains of S. dublin and S. cholerae-suis with and without virulence plasmids in macrophage from cattle and pigs will be compared. The cytotoxicity of these strains for the different macrophage populations will be quantified. Plasmid genes mediating cytotoxicity will be identified by transposon mutagenesis and sub-cloning. The impact of swapping plasmids between serotypes on macrophage cytotoxicity and virulence in cattle and pigs will be assessed.
