Abstract

We have recently shown that higher plants contain a gene for a cytochrome c6, in contrast to the generally held view. Sequence comparisons suggest the higher plant protein has a different function from the algal protein, possibly in redox regulated control. We will examine the likely function of the higher plant protein in 3 ways. We will study its 3-D structure using X-ray or NMR techniques, with particular reference to the features that suggest a regulatory role. We will study the proteins ability to interact with other plant redox carriers using spectrophotometry with wild-type and mutant proteins. We will study wild type and mutant plants to test our models of the proteins function in vivo.
