Abstract
This project seeks to understand the dynamic macrostructure of the light harvesting and reaction centre complexes of photosystem II in the chloroplast membranes of higher plants. It will consider the control of the assembly, configuration and stability of membrane supercomplexes by proteins and xanthophylls, the relationship of the macrostructure to membrane structure and grana formation, and understanding the structure and function of the trimeric state of the light harvesting complexes. For the first time, a genetic approach will be taken, using Arabidopsis lines with altered composition of specific light harvesting pigments and proteins. These will be examined by high-resolution electron microscopy, spectroscopy and protein analysis.
