Abstract

This programme will exploit new procedures we have developed to characterise previously the inaccessible states of the manganese-protein complex, the catalytic centre in photosynthetic water oxidation. The questions addressed are: How is electron transfer between water and P680 coupled to proton transfer? What is the role of Yz? What are the characteristics of the S3 and S4 states? When and where does water interact with the WOC? How is water oxidised? We will develop an improved model of the structure, redox states and mechanism of the complex. The project involves biochemistry, to prepare native and mutant photosystem II, and spectroscopy to characterise and study the samples.
