Abstract

Mutants defective in SUMO-1 modification display a range of cellular and nuclear abnormalities, indicating that SUMO-1 modification is likely to be required for several cellular processes. We will use the fission yeast as a model system to study Ulp1, one of two of the organism's SUMO-1 specific proteases. We will establish assays for identifying the major roles of Ulp1 within cells and will undertake genetic screens to investigate the interaction of Ulp1 with other cellular processes such as nucleocytoplasmic trafficking. We will then determine the role of SUMO-1 modification of proteins which interact with Ulp1.
