Abstract

We will study two new cap-binding proteins in yeast: (i) One of them, eIF4E2, is closely related to the first translational cap-binding protein we described in Schizosaccharomyces pombe (eIF4E1). We will characterise its interactions with other proteins and with mRNA, and define its physiological role in the context of stress conditions. (ii) The second protein, p36, is a new type of cap-binding factor that has homologous in other eukaryotes. We will characterise the subcellular location and physical/functional interactions of this type of protein in S. pombe and Saccharomyces cerevisiae, study its role in cell-free systems, and perform crystallisation trials.
