Abstract

This work aims to clarify the structure and function of a novel type of respiratory complex I isolated recently from pea chloroplasts. This so-called Ndh complex will be characterised with respect to subunit composition and primary structure. The nuclear-encoded ndh genes including those involved in oxidation of reductant will be cloned. In parallel, previously constructed tobacco chloroplast mutants lacking a functional Ndh complex will used to assess the activity of the Ndh complex in the thylakoid membrane. This work will provide important new information on a newly discovered version of complex I.
