Abstract
In guard cells, the best-known higher-plant cell model, downstream targets of Ca2+ are well defined, but the mechanisms potentiating changes in cystolic-free [Ca2+] ([Ca2+]i) are poorly understood. We have found that [Ca2+]i waves are evoked under voltage control, and that voltage and external signals (e.g.. ABA) interact in the [Ca2+]i response. Equipment funding is requested to enable spatio-temporal analysis of the mechanism, propagation of the [Ca2+]i response, and its interaction with ABA Avr9/Cf9-coupled pathogenesis using combined voltage clamp, Fura-2 and GFP-[Ca2+]i reporter (chameleon) technologies.
