Abstract
Our linked research group has shown that microtubules (MTs) are highly dynamic structures that rapidly reorientate in response to extracellular signals. Carrot MT- associated proteins (MAPs) have been isolated and shown to alert MT dynamics in vitro and colocalise to MTs through the cell cycle. Our pilot study has shown that carrot kinases copurify with MAPs and that they phosphorylate plant MAPs. Our data indicate the presence of cyclin-dependent and mitogen-activated protein kinases and support the idea that plant MT dynamics are regulated by MAP phosphorylation via cell cycle- and extracellular signal-dependent kinases. To pursue this work we will investigate: if kinases form complexes with MAPs; which MAPs are phosphorylated; how kinase activities and MAP phosphorylation vary with the cell cycle and in response to plant hormones and how MAP phosphorylation affects MT dynamics.
