Abstract

Recent studies in the lab of the principal applicant have identified a novel insertion pathway for integral thylakoid membrane proteins, which does not rely on proteinaceous translocation apparatus in the thylakoid membrane. The aims of the project are: (i), to determine the roles of electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions in the insertion mechanism, (ii), to define the roles of thylakoid-specific lipids in the insertion process, and (iii) to carry out detailed structural analysis on substrate proteins and insertion intermediates.
