Abstract

The reaction centre of green sulphur photosynthetic bacteria is distinguished from other photosynthetic reaction centres because it is homodimeric, i.e. composed of two identical protein sub-units. We will determine the sequence and ratio of electron transfer, and establish whether electron transfer in these reaction centres is unidirectional or bidirectional. Magnetic resonance techniques will be used to study a putative quinone electron acceptor in these reaction centres, and the rate of electron transfer from this quinone. Primary charge separation and the rate of reduction of the quinone will be measured using specially constructed laser system which can generate femtosecond pulses at any wavelength required.
