Abstract
The aims are to identify and characterise the specific enzymes involved in mRNA decay in the plastid and cytoplasm of plants. This will involve the identification of homologues of bacterial ribonucleases using antibodies, functional complementation of Escherichia coli mutants and biochemical assays. In parallel, the Escherichia coli mRNA degrading complex will be studied in order to advance our general knowledge of mRNA decay and also to provide probes for investigating the plant system. (Joint with grant C04213).
