Abstract

The major objective is the molecular characterisation of putative gamete receptors from the model fertilisation system of Fucus serratus, thus building on progress on our PMB1 programme. The purified proteins will be microsequenced and the data used to obtain DNA sequences and hence the predicted amino acid sequences of the molecules for comparison with other proteins of known receptor functions. Comparisons will be made with homologues from other Fucus species. Other studies will include partial characterisation of associated glycan moieties, binding studies on the interaction between the molecules, whether the sperm receptor is a selectin, and certain structure/function studies.
