Abstract

The activated sludge process (ASP) is a well established treatment of wastewaters from paper and board mills. ASPs can suffer from excessive growth of filamentous bacteria resulting in poor settlement of sludge, bulking, this produces a final effluent with excessive concentrations of solids. The microbiology of the bulking process is poorly understood and control measures tend to be non-specific and potentially environmentally damaging. Bulking organisms will be characterised at the molecular level and novel micro-molecular tools will be developed to monitor populations and individuals within the ASPs. These methodologies will be used to study the ecology and activity of dominant bulking organisms in relation to operational conditions both within the mill and associated with the ASP and to design bulking control strategies for ASPs treating paper and board mill wastes. (Joint with grants BSW11281 and BSW11282).
