Abstract

A TSE Resource Centre (RC) was established in 1998 to collect, store, characterise, produce and distribute a range of reagents needed for research into TSEs. The primary role was to provide a range of specialised research reagents and, secondarily, to be proactive in identifying and acquiring new reagents. Most TSE-specific reagents were not available commercially and were provided on an ad hoc basis by those laboratories that originally developed them. With the increased research on TSEs, there was a heavy demand on those few UK laboratories with the expertise and reagents. The establishment of a RC enabled the assembly of available reagents in one place, provided an infrastructure to produce sufficient amounts of each reagent and removed much of the work load and cost from individual laboratories. This application is to continue the RC for a further three years.
