Abstract

In this proposal we present evidence that sheep which are genetically susceptible or resistant to scrapie differ in the expression of particular epitopes of PrPc on the surface of lymphocytes. This difference may be associated with development and differentiation of PrPc+ lymphocyte subsets in vivo and be important in the peripheral pathogenesis of scrapie in the lymphoreticular system. This project will analyse expression of PrPc and allele specific PrPc epitopes on lymphocyte subsets isolated from different lymphoid compartments of the immune system in sheep and determine whether lymphocyte PrPc has a role in lymphocyte activation.
