Abstract

A TSE Resource Centre will be established to collect, store, characterise, produce and distribute a range of reagents needed by scientists working in the TSE field. The primary role of the centre will be to provide a range of specialised research reagents needed for TSE research and, secondarily, to be proactive in identifying and acquiring new research reagents that may be needed. Most TSE-specific research reagents are not available commercially and are currently provided on an ad hoc basis by those laboratories that originally developed them. With the increased demand for research on TSEs and the move to attract new groups into this area, there is a heavy demand being put on those few UK laboratories with the expertise and reagents. The establishment of a TSE Resource Centre will enable the assembly of available reagents in one place, provide an infrastructure to produce sufficient amounts of each reagent to meet the research needs of users, and in doing so, remove much of the unfunded work load and cost currently placed on individual laboratories.
