Abstract

PrP-Sc production in the persistently scrapie-infected cell line SMB is sensitive to scrapie- prophylactic compounds. Such compounds are useful tools for accessing the site of PrP-C to PrP-Sc transformation. Having stopped PrP-Sc production in a sub-line of SMB, it has been possible to re-infect only with selected scrapie strains. Determination of whether the scrapie strain-specific determinants persist in culture is of importance in determining the nature of the transmissible agent.
