Abstract

The plant phenylpropanoid pathway produces a variety of products that significantly affect interactions between organisms in the rhizosphere. The phenylpropanoid polymer lignin influences the rate of decomposition of plant residues, thereby affecting soil fertility and the soil microbial community. A diverse array of phenylpropanoid compounds are components of plant root exudates. Many are implicated as signal molecules promoting specific interactions. We have a unique collection of transgenic plants with specific changes in phenylpropanoid metabolism. We will use these plants to characterise and identify the roles of phenylpropanoids (from lignin and root exudates) in both general and specific biological interactions in the rhizosphere.
