Abstract

To develop, benchmark and apply a computer system to manage the uncertainty reasoning required for automated annotation of possible functions of protein coding region of genomes. Possible suggestions of gene function will be taken from various bioinformatics data sources (homology, motifs, pathway and the literature). Reasoning will be managed using a novel logic-based argumentation approach that combines quantitative, semi-quantitative (approximate) and qualitative forms of uncertainty. The system will be applied to model genomics. The results will be accessible via the WWW and incorporate an explicit representation of the justifications (arguments) for alternative annotations suitable for the biological end user.
