Abstract
Names (or terms) are fundamental to the integration of information but are prone to misapplication. The Prometheus project advanced taxonomy by using new database technology to ensure the precise use of organism names. Extending this technology and developing novel user-interfaces, this project will concentrate on the precise application of character descriptions, making objective definitions available for the future, and reconciling data from the past. The new system will incorporate a conceptual character model whose definitions refer to actual specimens. This will allow taxonomists for the first time to describe and reason about the characters that form the basis of classification, giving new insights into taxonomy. (Joint with grant 754/BIO14354.)
