Abstract
The overall aim of this project is to investigate and develop methods to enable the visual indexing of images of biological specimens held in a biological database. Biological specimens are frequently described in visual form for taxonomic and other purposes. However, to date, very little attention has been paid to effectively using these data as a prime key in information search and retrieval. We propose to develop a system that will take an input a series of image and corresponding drawings of selected specimens and learn the relationship (mapping) between the sets. A new image suitably presented to the system can then be classified according to which drawing (taxonomic type) it matches and ultimately a new drawing produced. (Joint with grant 72/BIO14261.)
