Abstract
The W3C's structured document (SD) technology will be used to create a unified approach for the communication of macromolecular information. The Document Object Model (DOM) provides syntactic interoperability between documents, and hypermedia provides additional structure. In conjunction with the Protein Data Bank we shall convert the new mmCIF representation for protein structure to SD form and provide client-side software. Semantics are provided by links to XML and CIF-based glossaries or by downloading domain- specific Java classes. Tools will be developed to allow users to configure their own domain-specific view of multiple linked databases (a Bio-DOM), with emphasis on integrating macromolecular sequence, structure and ligands.
