Abstract

An approach to creating a catalogue of life has been defined in the Species 2000 Programme and widely endorsed in the community. It makes use of autonomous Global Species Databases (GSDs) created and maintained by appropriate experts. These provide the central array in a federated architecture. However research is needed to overcome a number of problems if it is to function effectively. This project investigates how the uniform authority and wide taxonomic coverage can be obtained through accurate mapping of quality GSDs from many organisations. It investigates how the federated system can be designed to overcome the inherent problems of extreme heterogeneity, scalability and stability. The experimental system will subsequently be made available through the Species 2000 programme. (Joint with grant BIO10488).
