Abstract

Taxon catalogues have a complex set of integrity rules within and between species. These rules can be used for semi- automated screening of the species diversity knowledge sets that are increasingly being submitted electronically to world- wide species checklist projects. We propose to formalise the integrity rules and devise algorithms to detect conflicts between the data sets. This will allow us to create software tools to compare species diversity data sets for compatibility, and manage the reporting and resolution of conflicts. The resulting model, algorithms and tools will benefit a wide community of international species diversity database projects. The software architecture will be designed to allow application in two scenarios: merging knowledge sets at one site and linking dispersed autonomous heterogeneous databases such as those becoming available on the World-wide Web.
