Abstract

To facilitate understanding of , and access to, the information available for protein structures, we have constructed the Structural Classification of Proteins (SCOP) database. It provides a description of the structural and evolutionary relationships of the proteins of known structure, interactive viewers, sequence data and literature references. This freely available database is widely used. We will now develop procedures that will make the maintenance of SCOP largely automatic. We will also provide new facilities that will make available efficient browsing of structures using 3-D graphics, allow external databases to link directly into any level of SCOP and also link SCOP to the protein sequence library.
