Abstract

We propose to create a problem-solving environment for biodiversity research on the GRID. It will be a prototype, and it will be used to demonstrate research in a range of biodiversity investigations. Key components will be: (i) its ability to locate data on accurately specified taxa (plants, animals and micro-organisms); (ii) its ability to locate and extract data from thematic data sources for these taxa, even where differing nomenclature or classifications are used; and (iii) its ability to utilise these data sets for research using existing analytical software. The project will demonstrate the potential for developing intelligent systems on the GRID, and be a potential UK contribution to GBIF.
