Abstract

As homologous genes can play similar roles in many animals, the ability to mine tissue- archived data across organisms will facilitate the study of the genetic networks regulating tissue formation and function. XSPAN will provide the necessary computational support for identifying equivalent tissues and their initiation times in the main model organisms. The project has two overlapping phases: (1) XSPAN-core will deliver an XML-based distributed system and toolset that interoperates with existing anatomy databases; (2) XSPAN-ont will demonstrate the possibility of enhanced interoperability (with greater extensibility and maintainability) through developing and integrating into XSPAN-core a more formal XML- implemented ontology that makes available to computational processes what is now only implicit in existing anatomical databases designed for human use. (Joint with grant 17046).
