Abstract

The project will address three key biological prediction problems motivated by the current trend towards high-throughput data generation in molecular biology: prediction of functional effects of single nucleotide polymorphisms, prediction of interfaces involved in protein-protein interactions, and prediction of Gene Ontology categories. These will be addressed using novel Bayesian network-based methods, which will be compared to existing approaches to these problems developed using support vector machines and decision tress in the laboratories of the applicants. Bayesian networks will also be used to address some limitations associated with the natural language nature of the Gene Ontology. Methods developed by the project will be made available as GRID web services using the White Rose Computational Grid.
