Abstract

A new range of transition metal complexes able to sense oxidants are being synthesized as part of a funded Phd project, with the ultimate aim of developing imaging agents able to visualise oxidative stress and inflammation. These complexes change colour and become paramagnetic on oxidation, allowing detection by NMR. This project will characterise the redox properties of these complexes, their interactions with biological reductants and antioxidant enzymes, their toxicity and oxidation by stimulated phagocytic cells. The research will involve spectrophotometric analyses and T1 broadening of water in the NMR spectra. This fundamental research provides the basis for better future diagnosis and therapy of inflammatory diseases.
