Abstract

We have a detailed understanding of the genetics and biology of Agaricus species and have cloned and sequenced the mating type genes of the model mushroom Coprinus cinereus. We aim to exploit this knowledge to clone and characterise the MAT genes of the commercially grown species A. bisporus. Cloning procedures will then be extended to isolate MAT genes from other Agaricus species which exhibit a range of different breeding strategies. This will enable us to elucidate the ways in which these different breeding systems have evolved. Using a recently established transformation protocol we will then test the function of cloned MAT genes in A. bisporus and evaluate their potential for modifying the breeding behaviour of this species as an aid for strain improvement.
