Abstract
The joint centre for sustainable intensification in agriculture (CSIA) is centred around a primary partnership between RRes and CAAS, with several additional Chinese partners in place to bring together a complementarity of skills and capacity in areas of research where a collaborative approach will lead to faster and better solutions for agriculture as well as increased impact and translation of the research effort. Specifically CSIA seeks to: 1. Enact a programme of colloaborative reseach to develop soultions for the following focus areas: i. Crop efficiency, ii. Soil management, iii. Next-generation Integrated Pest, Disease and Weed Management solutions, iv. Modelling agricultural innovation, practice and policy. 2. Enact a programme of capacity building in SIA through PhD student training. 3. Facilitate increased staff exchange between the UK and China. 4. Undertake Knowldege exchange activities through: i. CSIA Scientific meetings; ii. CSIA Student training school; CSIA International Conferences
Summary
The Joint UK-China Centre for the Sustainable Intensification of Agriculture (CSIA) is led by Rothamsted Research and the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS) and provides an open platform for research, capacity building and knowledge exchange between the UK and China. A further select group of Chinese organisations contribute to joint activities under this banner in partnership with Rothamsted, these include the China Agriculture University (CAU); Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS); Nanjing Agricultural University (NAU) and Northwest Agriculture & Forestry University (NWAFU). The third internal call for seed-funding to support joint research with CAAS is currently open and, through prior calls, CSIA currently supports six research projects: • Microbial activities and nutrient cycling in soil-root-shoot system under different soil water conditions • Management of soil nutrients for improving soil quality and reducing GHG emissions • Amelioration of soil acidification from long-term chemical fertilizers combined with organic materials • Chasing the high-fliers: Aerial sampling and flight capacity of high-flying migrant insect pests in China • Migratory patterns of cereal aphid pests and invasion risk zones in China and the UK • Natural genetic variation in a trehalose phosphate phosphatase wheat gene for yield We anticipate supporting a further six projects in 2018. CSIA also supports travel fellowships for early-mid career staff to spend time training in Chinese laboratories. CSIA also supports ‘champion teams’ to develop closer ties with key groups at CAU, CAS and NAU. A joint CAS-CAU-Rothamsted venture around sustainable grassland-livestock systems is in development and we also hope significantly expand our interactions with CAU around knowledge exchange activities through their networks in China. There have been several successful, CSIA-linked, joint applications for research funding to other agencies.
