Abstract

This proposal aims to build upon a preliminary visit and organise a broader UK-East Africa scoping meeting on synthetic biology to explore and identify practical applications of relevance to East Africa for synthetic biology technologies. This meeting will also lead to the development of a UK-E. African research network and the establishment of potential research collaborations focused around the identified application areas. The meeting is part of a joint UK synthetic biology Africa initiative (see LinkedIN Africa Synthetic Biology Group) with a separate meeting being planned in South Africa coordinated 2 by Jim Haselhoff and colleagues (Cambridge). Together we have coordinated our meeting programs and timings and have included cross representation of speakers where appropriate. Together both meetings will ensure a broad coverage of the African continent and both meetings will also share outputs and the identified research networks as part a broader UKAfrica synthetic biology initiative. Also both meetings are focused on identifying application for near-term practical synthetic biology solutions and technologies (e.g. low cost paperbased diagnostics) as well as seeding the development of synthetic biology research and training on the African continent through exchanges, collaboration and the sharing of open source teaching resources.
