Abstract
Legumes play an important role in agricultural systems in part through nitrogen fixation. Nodule initiation and development is studied widely, but less attention has been paid to nodule and root senescence and the resulting nitrogen losses. Unravelling the genetic control of these processes will enhance our understanding of the relationship between root senescence and nitrogen cycling in soil and permit precision breeding to reduce N losses.
