Abstract

Oat genetics and genomics research has relevance to the national and international monocot community. The research being undertaken includes; genetic mapping; development of resources such as germplasm, BAC libraries, orthologous markers for trait analysis; determination of the control of target traits; development of high-throughput phenotyping methods. A diploid model population is the subject of intensive genome and transcriptome sequencing efforts. This work supports fundamental research on genome evolution, particularly in regard to adaptive and domestication responses, and is exploited directly by the IBERS plant breeding programmes, leading to the development of superior varieties. Target traits in the breeding programmes include high oil content, high ?-glucan content, increased nutrient use efficiency and improved panicle architecture.
