Abstract
The overall objective is to improve our understanding of fluid, solute and microbial transport in soil through reference to the soil structure. Improved ways of characterising and modelling soil structure will form a basis for pore-scale modelling of transport processes. The multi- scale nature of soil structure affects transport and our earlier work on fractal models of soil structure will be directly relevant. Structural models will be based on soil pore structure measurements, using image analysis of soil thin sections, water retention curves, mercury intrusion porosimetry, and particle and aggregate size distributions. Pore connectivity will be characterised. Solute breakthrough curves and the spatial distribution of solutes will be measured and modelled and related to the underlying pore space structures.
