Abstract
This work is the SRI component of the EU SmartSpectra project. The whole project seeks to develop a multiband image forming sensor where the individual bands (number, width and centre wavelength) can be configured by the user. The scope for sensing in three applications will also be assessed in the project and suitable novel techniques developed. The SRI component is in two parts:- 1) A scientific component where we take advantage of the extra flexibility afforded by the sensor to develop image analysis techniques for vegetation monitoring both in the agricultural and environmental contexts; 2) A development component where we help to provide software for a user's toolkit of analysis techniques. We will develop techniques for the principled choice of wavebands. We will extend our previous work on dealing with illumination changes in outdoor scenes from 3 to multiple bands and develop a method for dealing with interface reflections (i.e. on shiny surfaces). We will demonstrate our techniques in two main applications:- distinguishing components in images of vegetative agricultural scenes, and measuring the vegetation diversity in an ecological monitoring situation.
