Abstract
This study aims to formulate and validate a mathematical model of particle dispersion in porous media. The porous media will be treated as a periodic array of packed spheres. Attention will be focused on tracer-particle dispersion in low Reynolds-number air flows through such a system. Statistical properties of the air flow will be predicted using a low Reynolds-number kappa-epsilon model. A Lagrangian stochastic model of tracer-particle dispersion will be formulated. This model will then be used in conjunction with the predicted statistical properties of the air flow to predict tracer-particle dispersion. These predictions will be validated at laboratory scale. This research, which supports the Food Directorate Strategy, has implications in many biological sectors, e.g. the dispersion of diseases, the airborne movements of microorganisms, application of chemicals as fogs.
