Abstract
Contamination of non-target organisms is a key factor in pesticide use in agriculture, yet there is a lack of data and appropriate models that can be used for estimating exposure from spray drift. The aim of the project is therefore to provide data sets that can be used to (a ) extend and validate existing deterministic models to predict deposition of drifting spray droplets onto relevant non-target surfaces; (b) test against current risk assessment procedures for registration, and (c) contribute to future development of stochastic models. The scope of the project will include characterising the spray cloud immediately upwind of the target and the subsequent deposition on that target. The objectives of the project are: (1) For a defined air flow and spray cloud, to relate deposition on an object downwind of the source to the geometry, structure and other characteristics of that surface; (2) To determine how the characteristics of the air flow and spray cloud influence that deposition; (3) To provide a dataset that can be used in future work to evaluate the use of deterministic models to predict the levels of deposition and identify the processes that are currently poorly modelled; (4) To provide a rigorous dataset for evaluating current risk assessment procedures used in the registration of plant protection products. The approach will be largely experimental, using wind tunnel measurements of spray drift profiles and deposition on relevant plant species and artificial collectors; field measurements of spray drift profiles, wind characteristics and deposition on plants and artificial collectors in a simplified environment; field measurement of deposition on plant species in their natural environment in field margins.
